Surgery by Vicky D. at InsiderPages
I had outpatient surgery at UMC, as soon as I awke, they were trying to get me up and out. My nurse told me 3 times that i did NOT have to go to the bathroom as it was time for her break. She finally passed me off to another nurse so she could have her break, and i could pee!!. It took less than 5 minutes to give discharge instructions , I am amazed that she could not devote that time. THEN, I had to walk up TWO flights of stairs out to the car after abdominal surgery!!! It was SAD, very SAD. I feel compelled not to pay my bill because the care was so poor, but you know how that goes, LOL!

PROBABLY WORST OUT OF THE FIFTY STATES by betty l. at InsiderPages
Never have been to this hospital, but I will tell you this.
It is all of them in Las Vegas.
Run dont walk if you need anything more than treatment for a cold.
There is a long standing saying out here CALL AN AIRLINE NOT AN AMBULANCE.
Long standing joke at UCLA in Calif. who are we gettting from
Las Vegas today that they botched up on Wake up Las Vegas
and check all doctors that you go to.

poor service
I had a miscarriage at a quickcare facility. And was rushed by ambulance to UMC. Layed in the Emergency area on a gurney in the hallway. When I was seen by the staff. They cleaned me out with force and care for the situation at all, and then literally put me out with bloody clothes and all. I was waiting for my husband to pick me up and bring me some clean clothes. No they told me to leave now. Very rude people, making a tough situation worse than it needed to be. I left crying.

Nursing care stinks, as does social services by Lady C. at InsiderPages
I was an employee working at UMC in Feb 2007, when I had to have emergency sugery there for 3 ruptured disks in my lumbar/sacral area. Being an employee, one would think the care should or would be excellent. But it wasn't. The nurses never did wound care, which resulted in a worse infection to my sacral area, causing the need for continuous debridement. Social services & case managers refused to get me help, and kept stating I needed to go home. I myself am a case manager. When a patient is not healing properly more steps need to be made to ensure a healthier discharge. I tried to speak to the doctor who never showed up, but I definitely received a huge bill from a Dr. V. Patel. I saw him the first day of admission, no time after that. I was in the hospital for almost 2 months, and was only seen by medical interns, who all stood at end of bed, talking down to me, like I wasn't even there. They ordered medications I was allergic to, and refused to accept. Opiates put me into anaphylactic shock, and one doctor kept ordering morphine for the pain. I kept refusing asking to speak to my neurosurgeon, but the nurses all refused to call my doctor. The day of discharge was when I saw my own doctor. He then told me I had to go to wound care therapy at the Burn Center. I was billed for services not rendered, medications I refused to take, but the nurses charted they were given. It's called insurance fraud. And I saw this working for them in ER daily. Now here I am a patient, and they still defraud the insurance companies.

OKAY HOSPITAL FOR L&D
This was my first pregnancy - so I really don't have anything to critique it against. I had to wait an hour and a half to get in to be admitted for my induction. I was scheduled at 9pm got in the room at 10:30pm. I was there for 3 days total. Most of the nurses were nice but a few weren't! THE PROBLEMS: I got stuck 8 times for my epidural (must have been the doc's first time :) He gave me soo much medicine that I got sick and hardly remember my delivery! Everything was fine til then. After delivery they left me in my delivery room - they were suppose to wheel me over to tthe Recovery Room but did not have any room over there. When I awoke after delivery no one would help me to the restroom - heck I didn't even know if I could go to the restroom - I was still all hooked up to all the monitors. NO ONE CAME I kept buzzing them and finally after 45 min. I had to go - couldn't hold it any longer. No Nurses showed up - after waiting an hour and a half and buzzing them 20 some odd times I got out of bed and stood in the hallway til someone would help me, or even tell me where my baby was! They finally wheeled me over to the Recovery Side where everyone has to share their room with another patient! They put a hispanic - NON English speaking woman next to me, which was kinda annoying becuase she kept changing the only TV to Spanish speaking shows only and turned it up and I could NOT communicate with her. Anyways I ended up having to wait FOREVER for pain reliever medication because they failded to give it to me on the Delivery side and had to write a new perscription and so on. I did NOT get to eat Breakfast OR Lunch because I missed the ordering time becuase they failed to move me ontime. Then when I got my baby the nurses kept waking us both up every hour to feed the baby! I was breast feeding her and they kept feeding her formula - it was SO frustrating! OVERALL IT WAS OKAY. I GOT A HEALTHY BABY AND I SURVIVED THE DELIVERY.

Billing by Irmfried T. at InsiderPages
I went for a procedure to UMC on 11/9/05. I have two insurance carriers - Aetna and Medicare. I was satisfied with the surgery but very disappointed with the nursing care. I spoiled myself while under anesthisia and when I woke up the nurses refused to clean me and rushed me out. I discarded this experience for a long time but guess what - today, 7/16/07, I received a bill from UMC for a copayment of close to $400.00. I called the business office and was on hold for 4, read that again, 4 hours. I still do not have an answer..
It is quite clear to me why UMC is in financial trouble -

A Diamond in the Rough! by Debra V. at InsiderPages
UMC gets a bad rap because of its age and it's county hospital reputation. It's far from being a 2nd class facility. The buildings may not be brand spanking new, but the care is what counts!Being a teaching hospital, the staff is up to date with the latest technology and procedures. Literally cutting edge.Yes, the ER takes forever if you're not a true emergency---but that's because they never turn anyone away, regardless of income or lack of insurance.Never doubt the level of care you'll receive, especially as an in-patient!P.S. The cafeteria's not bad either!
PROS: Top Notch, Cutting EdgeGreat In-patient care!
CONS: Long wait for ER

Level 1 Truama Center by Vasana P. at InsiderPages
UMC Medical Center is a level 1 trauma center and it's the only one that is level 1 in Southern Nevada. They have some of the best doctors and specialists working there. Their emergency department is great and quick. Everyone there is very nice and helpful. The only bad thing is very hard to get in and out because they always have construction going on.

Hospital service is very good! by Beth D. at InsiderPages
UMC has an excellent trauma center. It is the place that some of the most critical patients in this part of the U.S. are flown to in order to receive care. I have had a few surgeries with this hospital and the staff seems to be attentive to the patients need. The only drawback is that the emergency room is a bit of a nightmare. The wait is extremely long.hours long!
